Abstract
Monotectic alloys have promising applications in wear-resistant automotive components. These low-melting temperature dispersions of elements reduce hardness and facilitate flow under sliding conditions, resulting in favorable tribological behavior. Many studies have attempted to better understand the monotectic reaction, assuming that the interphase spacing (λ) follows classical relations used for eutectics. However, some traditional growth laws have not been shown to be valid for transient heat flow conditions. This work analyzed unidirectional solidification experiments in unsteady conditions with hypomonotectic alloys Al-0.9%Pb and Al-5.5%In, in addition to the monotectic alloy Al-1.2%Pb.
