Comparação do Impacto Ambiental duma Usina Elétrica quando Utiliza Motores de Óleo Combustível Pesado e quando Utiliza Motores a Gás
(INSTITUTO DE TECNOLOGIA, 2013) SILVA, Wagner Ferreira; CAMPOS, Lucila Maria de Souza; MIGUEL, Paulo Augusto Cauchick; RODRIGUEZ, Jorge Laureano Moya; LEITE, Jandecy Cabral; MAGALHÃES, Edilson Marques
The study compares the environmental impact of a power plant in the Brazilian Amazon when using heavy fuel oil (HFO) engines and natural gas engines. It analyzes emissions of pollutants such as CO, CO₂, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter, noting that gas engines emit less NOx and SOx but more CO and CO₂ per unit of power supplied.

Environmental and economic impact of the use of natural gas for generating electricity in The Amazon: A case study
(INSTITUTO DE TECNOLOGIA, 2015) SILVA, Wagner Ferreira; CAMPOS, Lucila M. S.; MOYA-RODRIGUEZ, Jorge L.; LEITE, Jandecy Cabral; MAGALHÃES, Edilson Marques
The study assessed the environmental and economic impacts of replacing heavy fuel oil (HFO) with natural gas (NG) in a thermoelectric plant in the Amazon, Brazil, from 2010 to 2012. Results showed a 20% reduction in energy generation costs (R$ 282/MWh in 2012) and significant decreases in CO₂, NOₓ, and SOₓ emissions. Despite an average thermal efficiency of 37.86%, the analysis underscores the economic and environmental feasibility of NG, recommending combined-cycle technologies for further optimization. Specific consumption, capacity factors, and emission data were compared, highlighting benefits aligned with sustainable energy policies.

Avaliação da Mudança de Matriz Energética da Usina Companhia Energética Manauara – UTE Manauara na Perspectiva de Melhoria da Qualidade do Ar
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014) SILVA, Fernando Pégas da; LIMA, Aline Maria Meiguins de
Abstract: Thermal power plants (UTE) are generating stations supplying electricity with coal, diesel oil, nuclear power and biomass. The Manauara Energy Company plant, located in the city of Manaus/AM, changed its energy matrix from fuel oil (OC) to natural gas (GN). Natural gas generates almost no particulate matter or sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide emissions are on average 30% lower compared to other fuels. The present study aims to characterize the changes in the indices of gaseous effluents when changing the energy matrix (from fuel oil to natural gas) at the UTE Manauara. The methodology used data derived from the monitoring of gaseous emissions and air quality. From these, it was observed that the analyzed parameters were within the levels required by CONAMA resolutions, the researched generating groups operate in accordance with the required environmental quality conditions, and the change in the energy matrix from fuel oil to natural gas was positive.
